Department of Philosophy

Why Philosophy? Athena Teaching Student

Overall, philosophy is an excellent part of any student's general University Education. Courses in philosophy can be taken towards several degrees; and virtually all programs of study at SDSU can be enriched by the inclusion of one or more of our courses. Masters programs are offered for students who wish to go on to do graduate study in Philosophy.

Support Philosophy

You can help SDSU Philosophy continue in the search for wisdom by making the Philosophy Department a home for talented scholars and a perpetual source of intellectual energy, creativity, and inspiration.

Your donations to our Department make a huge impact on the academic and creative life of our students and faculty, and help us perpetuate the life of the mind by providing special opportunities for academic growth and development. As you know, education at all levels has suffered enormous shortfalls due to the economic recession. Your generosity allows us to offset the challenges of the budget crisis. The Department of Philosophy uses the generous donations from its alumni and friends to further opportunities for students, providing money for students to travel to research projects and present papers, Additional funds are used to support outside speakers and the undergraduate and SoCal philosophy conference held in the fall. Donations also allow us to preserve lecturers and teaching assistants, and develop our research so that we become better scholars and teachers.

You can make a real difference in the lives of students and faculty in the Department of Philosophy.

Thank you for your support!

Previous philanthropic gifts have supported Department of Philosophy initiatives such as:

  • The Undergraduate Conference in Philosophy (May 2012).
  • Awards for outstanding graduates

Future gifts to the department could support:

  • The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, allowing a team of three to five undergraduates, plus two graduate assistant coaches and a faculty member, to travel to San Jose in early December to participate in the California Regional Bowl.
  • Annual Student Philosophy Conference
  • Annual SoCal Philosophy Conference

All gifts are processed through the SDSU Foundation. Donations may be made online through the SDSU Research Foundation. There is also a donation form available here, if you would prefer to use that.
